About the Artist
Michael Clark, the sculptor, is an original and talented artist who in the course of his life, has discovered an innovative and creative approach to Carving Australia’s iconic national gemstone, Opal. Part of Michael’s unique style is that the stone is not an object to dominate, bring into submission or conformity, but rather to allow the opal to reveal and liberate itself.
Opal is an ancient treasure waiting to be discovered, containing 100 million years of spirit and stories. As a gemstone, opal stands alone in displaying its own unique ability to split white light and produce a vibrant intensity and variation of electric, iridescent colours.
Queensland Boulder Opal is attractive and different due to the natural hosts, ironstone and sandstone, which, together, create an outstanding partnership with the banding and swirling of the natural stone. This challenge lends both inspiration and great stability to these unique carvings.
Michael‘s sculptures are displayed on naturally fallen and recycled Australian Red Cedar timber and are crafted especially to accompany each individual opal sculpture.
Michael Clark’s Eco-Studio is situated in an Eden of his own creation. Built entirely by his own hand, he has created a highly alternative designed home and studio which flows through to his reforested natural gardens containing many Australian rare and native plant species. Michael’s extensive knowledge and understanding of landscapes, history and Australian culture are what he draws on for his inspiration. His eco-studio has a profound effect on the creative levels of this forest dweller and the art works that emanate from deep within.
Each piece is carefully coaxed from primal stones, is part of a Signature Series, and range from “picture stones” to abstract and surreal, as well as freeform, purely organic sculptures. These “one of a kind” sculptures are investment pieces which are titled, catalogued and come with a Certificate of Authenticity,
